July 3, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan and Tajikistan are considering the possibility of involving companies from both countries in the production of export-oriented products in the Alat Free Economic Zone and five free economic zones in Tajikistan.

The Ambassador of Tajikistan to Azerbaijan, Ilkhom Abdurakhmon, says that the relevant instruction was given by the intergovernmental commission (at a meeting on May 21, 2026) as part of the work to expand investment cooperation between the two countries.

He noted that the parties will have to develop a "road map" that will determine the mechanisms for implementing joint projects.

"Currently, cooperation between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan in establishing joint ventures and developing industrial cooperation is developing in stages and becoming more practical. In this context, on July 9, 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on the sidelines of the I International Textile Forum in Dushanbe between the Azerbaijan Textile Industry Association and the Tajikistan Cotton and Textile Association, which provides for joint activities to develop the textile industry, including sustainable agriculture, sericulture, and trade. This confirms that cooperation in the textile industry has already reached a practical level and has a solid institutional basis for further development," he said.

According to the diplomat, cooperation is also developing in the field of cotton production: Azerpambig LLC has already signed contracts with a number of Tajik companies for the supply of technical cotton raw materials. At the same time, TALCO OJSC and Azeraluminium LLC continue to explore opportunities for joint investment, which could become the basis for further development of industrial cooperation.

"In terms of timing, at this stage, the parties are primarily focused on the practical preparation of projects, the coordination of business participation mechanisms, and the formation of a stable foundation for future decisions," he added.
