Aviation market suffers from kerosene shortages, but SAF remains a niche solution

May 8, Fineko/abc.az. The global aviation industry is facing increasing shortage of kerosene, but eco-friendly aviation fuel SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) is not yet becoming a mass alternative.

ABC.AZ reports that SAF is produced from vegetable oils, waste fats and other biomaterials, but its share in global aviation fuel consumption remains below 0.1%. The largest producers are Neste, Valero, Eni and TotalEnergies.

Despite the plans of the EU and IATA to increase the share of SAF to 6% by 2030 and to 70-90% by 2050, development of the industry is hampered by the high cost of production, limited output and insufficient infrastructure.

Today, SAF is used only in mixtures with ordinary kerosene (up to 50%), and its production remains significantly more expensive than traditional fuel - by nearly 2.8 times. At the same time, scaling can reduce the price, but technologies and certification are still in the early stages of development.

Thus, with growing shortage of aviation kerosene, transition to eco-friendly alternatives remains limited and is developing more slowly than expected.
