Volkswagen to Implement Production Cuts at Osnabrück Plant as Defense Sector Talks Progress

21:00 - 17.06.2026

June 17, Fineko/abc.az. German automotive giant Volkswagen (VW) has decided to scale down manufacturing operations at its Osnabrück assembly plant in Germany. A company spokesperson announced that the upcoming summer shutdown will be extended by one week, alongside additional non-production days.

According to ABC.AZ, the operational slowdown is tied to shifting seasonal demand fluctuations for the "T-Roc Cabriolet" open-top model, which traditionally sees sharp order contractions during the second half of the year.

Plant Outlook and Defense Industry Negotiations:

  • Production Halt and Workforce Uncertainty: Assembly of the T-Roc Cabriolet is slated to end by next year, with all vehicle manufacturing at the facility winding down completely by 2027. The future of the site, which employs roughly 2,300 workers, remains highly volatile. The VW Works Council has urgently requested management to provide long-term employment guarantees.

  • Strategic Pivot to Defense Contractors: VW management confirmed ongoing high-level discussions with defense sector firms regarding alternative use cases for the manufacturing hub. Israeli state-owned weapons manufacturer "Rafael Advanced Defense Systems" is currently in the pipeline as a potential buyer or partner, though a finalized deal has yet to materialize. Meanwhile, German defense contractor "Rheinmetall" has reportedly withdrawn from the bidding process.
