March 2, Fineko/abc.az. The military events in Iran may have not only military, but also economic consequences for the countries of the region. What impact can the war have on the economy of Azerbaijan?
ABC.AZ informs that turnover between Azerbaijan and Iran in 2025 has changed slightly compared to the previous year and amounted to $644 million. In 2024, this figure was $647 million.
Commenting on the situation, economist and MP Vugar Bayramov noted that although the figures show that trade relations between the countries are not insignificant, the structure of trade turnover creates different impression. The significant part of turnover accounted for imports from Iran.
In 2025, out of overall trade turnover of $644 million, $624 million were generated through imports from Iran. In other words, only 3% of overall trade turnover accounted for Azerbaijan's exports to Iran. Azerbaijan's exports to Iran totaled only $20 million. This means that last year the negative balance in trade with Iran reached $604 million.
"Consequently, we have maintained negative balance in trade relations with Iran for many years. In other words, Iran benefits more from trade relations with Azerbaijan. This means that if technical difficulties in trade with Iran continue, it will not have significant impact on Azerbaijan's exports. Statistical analysis from previous years shows that bilateral trade is dominated by imports from Iran. Iran's share in Azerbaijan's overall exports is not even expressed in significant figures. Exports bring currency to the country, while imports lead to its outflow. As for the possible consequences, they may manifest themselves in a reduction in imports from Iran. Construction materials, agricultural products, dried fruits, light industry goods, in particular, household industrial products are imported in Azerbaijan from Iran."
