February 16, Fineko/abc.az. The Thai government will start charging fees from tourists visiting the country.
ABC.AZ reports that the Cabinet of Ministers of Thailand approved the introduction of a fee from foreign tourists from 1 June, which will range from 150 to 300 baht ($4 - $9).
Travelers arriving in Thailand by land and sea will be charged 150 baht, and air passengers - 300 baht.
It is assumed that the funds raised will go to support travelers injured in accidents, as well as the development of tourist destinations.
In May 2019, the authorities announced plans to introduce a tourist fee to restore natural places. The authors of the initiative assured that the amount of tax would be minimal and would not affect the industry. However, in September, it was decided to postpone these plans, since at that time the collection could cause additional damage to the sector, which was in a state of stagnation.
In February 2020, the Ministry of Tourism returned to the idea of introducing a tax against the background of massive decrease in tourist traffic because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the timing of the initiative's entry into force was not called at first until May 2021, when the fee was decided to be introduced from January 2022, and then until January of this year.
