Beijing Threatens Retaliation Against US Over Iran Sanctions

14:53 - 25.08.2026

August 25, Fineko/abc.az. Following the latest US sanctions targeting companies in China and Hong Kong, Beijing has threatened retaliation against Washington, signaling it will not back down from its cooperation with Tehran.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed China's strong opposition to unilateral sanctions, warning that such actions risk escalating the conflict. The Chinese official highlighted that the immediate priority must be de-escalating tensions and returning to negotiations, emphasizing that Beijing will take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate interests.

Although the US Department of the Treasury unveiled a new sanctions package targeting dozens of individuals and entities linked to Iran, Washington avoided targeting major Chinese financial institutions. Notably, China purchases the majority of Iran's oil and stands as Iran's second-largest trading partner following the UAE's decision in 2025 to sever economic ties with Tehran.
