TikTok to Pay $400 Million to Settle US Children's Privacy Lawsuit

12:30 - 22.08.2026

August 22, Fineko/abc.az. The US Department of Justice announced a $400 million settlement agreement with TikTok and its parent company ByteDance to resolve a lawsuit alleging violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

The agreement represents one of the largest civil penalties ever obtained under COPPA. Under the terms, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately, with the remaining $100 million contingent on the dissolution of a prior consent decree involving its predecessor, Musical.ly.

The Department of Justice highlighted that since the initial complaint was filed in 2024, TikTok has undertaken substantial structural, managerial, and data privacy reforms across its platform operations.
