SpaceX warns EU about threat of Starlink shutdown due to protectionist measures by Brussels

June 22, Fineko/abc.az. American corporation SpaceX has sent an official warning to the European Union authorities, saying that a new initiative by Brussels to protect European satellite operators could leave the region without modern Starlink services.

ABC.AZ reports, referring to the Financial Times, that the European Commission intends to reserve the bulk of strategic 2 GHz frequency range (used for direct communication of satellites with smartphones - Direct-to-Device) exclusively for European players, severely restricting access for providers from the U.S. and China.

Key parameters of the geopolitical release:

The threat of communication in Ukraine and the risks of interference: SpaceX stressed that artificially dividing the spectrum would lead to global technical interference for emergency services. The company emphasized that the EU initiative jeopardizes the stability of more than 50,000 Starlink terminals deployed in Ukraine to provide critical humanitarian and emergency communications.

Washington's retaliatory measures: Brussels' desire to limit Elon Musk's expansion for the sake of "technological sovereignty" provoked a harsh reaction in the U.S. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has already warned that in case of discrimination against American companies, the U.S. will take mirror protectionist measures and block the access of European satellite operators to its market.
