U.S. demands urgent guarantees from NATO on Strait of Hormuz

April 9th, Fineko/abc.az. The administration of Donald Trump has put forward strict demands to NATO allies: to submit within a few days specific legal and military obligations to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, ABC.AZ informs, referring to Bloomberg.

Negotiations took place at the White House, the Pentagon and the U.S. Department of State and were accompanied by tense atmosphere. Despite promises by the international coalition to help open the strait, it remains closed amid ongoing strikes between Iran and Israel.

Iran claims that Israel's actions against Hezbollah violate the truce. Against this background, European allies doubt the realism of the deadlines set by Washington.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker made it clear that the allies must prove their importance, otherwise the format of relations with the alliance may be revised.
