October 30, Fineko/abc.az. In the coming days, Azerbaijan will begin receiving persimmons harvested throughout the country into cold storage facilities, ABC.AZ informs, quoting Gadir Yusifov, the chairman of the Association of Persimmon Producers & Exporters of Azerbaijan.
According to Yusifov, despite the high yield of persimmons against last year, deterioration of the economic situation in Russia, which is considered the main export market, negatively affects sales: "This year, persimmon prices in the Russian market are 30-40% lower than in the previous year. The main cause of this is weakening of purchasing power. People can't shop like they used to, so persimmons have become cheaper, just like other agricultural products."
Eventually, Azerbaijani persimmon exporters are targeting the Turkish market. According to Yusifov, the new trade agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Turkey has created great opportunities for persimmon exporters: "According to the agreement between the two countries, 15 items of products can be sold without customs duties. Initially, persimmon was not included in this list. But I contacted the Ministry of Economy, and as a result, we achieved the inclusion of persimmons in this list. As a result, Azerbaijani persimmons are exported to Turkey without paying VAT. This increases competitiveness of products, as well as creates new market opportunities for exporters."
In addition, according to Yusifov, persimmon exports are not limited only to Turkey: "Currently, the products are also supplied to the markets of Ukraine and Belarus. Besides, it is planned to export to some Arab and European countries. The geography of Azerbaijani persimmon exports will expand in the coming years."
