Trump: U.S. to impose duties of 35% on imports from Canada from August 1

July 11, Fineko/abc.az. U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney notifying him of the imposition of import duties on goods from Canada starting on August 1.

ABC.AZ informs that Trump posted the letter on his page in Truth Social.

"Starting from August 1, the U.S. will impose duties of 35% on Canadian products shipped to the U.S., separately from industry tariffs," the letter says.

The head of the White House warned Ottawa against retaliatory actions, stressing that in this case Washington would add "any number you choose" to the announced 35%.

Trump justified his decision by Canada's inability to stop the smuggling of fentanyl, while noting that changes could be made to the current tariff plan if Canada worked with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking. In addition, the U.S. president cited tariff and non-tariff restrictions on trade, trade deficits and duties on American dairy products in the amount of 400% as reasons for imposing of new duties in August.

The tariff schedule may change depending on the state of bilateral relations, American administration’s head added.
