Ex-head of European Council: Tariff wars harm the global economy

July 3, Fineko/abc.az. Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council, said that tariff wars and protectionism contradict national interests and damage the global economy.

ABC.AZ informs that when speaking at the Global Peace Forum in Beijing, he stressed that such measures undermine trust and are not based on rational economic calculations.

Van Rompuy urged the government to avoid steps that could exacerbate the already tense international situation. He added that protection from unfair trade should not turn into total protectionism. He also expressed confidence in the prospects of cooperation between the EU and China, mentioning the possibility of updating the investment agreement.
