February 21, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan further increased cigarette exports abroad in 2024 with a rise in domestic cigarette production.
ABC.AZ reports that in 2024, our country sold 106 million packs of cigarettes for $33.6 million abroad. The volume of cigarette exports grew by 88% versus 2023, and the total cost increased by 135%.
Tabaterra CJSC, the main producer and exporter in the country, received foreign exchange income of $35 million last year. In 2023, the company's income was only $7.7 million.
In 2023, Russia was the main buyer of Azerbaijani cigarettes, but in 2024 it lost this status. It was replaced by Georgia. In 2024, Georgia paid Azerbaijan $30.7 million in foreign currency for 90 million packs of cigarettes. Thus, the export of cigarettes to Georgia increased by 261% and 296% in quantitative and monetary terms, respectively.
With the growth of exports, cigarette prices have also become higher than in 2023.
So, if in 2023 20 pieces or 1 pack were sold abroad for 25 cents, then in 2024 prices increased to 31 cents.
But the selling prices to Georgia, the main buyer, were increased by a smaller margin.
In 2023, a pack of cigarettes was sold in this country for 31 cents, and in 2024 - for 34 cents, that is, 3 cents more expensive. As a result, the price increase brought Azerbaijan an additional $2.7 million in revenue from Georgia.
