US Considers 7.5% Tariff on Chinese Goods Over Overcapacity Concerns

17:44 - 26.08.2026

August 26, Fineko/abc.az. The United States is considering imposing a 7.5% tariff on Chinese goods following accusations against Beijing of creating excess manufacturing capacity. The decision could be announced ahead of the scheduled bilateral meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping on September 24.

According to insider sources, the final rate has not yet been officially approved. One proposed mechanism involves initially setting a higher nominal duty, followed by a partial suspension to achieve an effective tariff rate of 7.5%.

Through this measure, Washington aims to address trade imbalances and offset price pressures caused by surplus Chinese industrial output on international markets.
