March 14, Fineko/abc.az. If the conflict in Ukraine drags on, it may lead to a restriction of world supplies of basic products - wheat, corn and sunflower.
ABC.AZ reports that this, in turn, will lead to a sharp rise in the price of food on the planet.
Gilbert Ungbo, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, told The Guardian that the pandemic and climate change are also exacerbating the effects of food shortages.
According to Arif Hussein, chief economist of the UN World Food Program, the consequences of the Ukrainian crisis will hit other parts of the world.
"Grain and oil prices are rapidly approaching and even surpassing indicators that have not been observed since the food and fuel crisis of 2008," the expert explained.
The newspaper recalled that Russia is the largest supplier of wheat in the world export market with a share of about 17%, and also one of the largest exporters of corn.
At that, food prices were rising even before the situation in Ukraine worsened. This was influenced by the climate crisis and the coronavirus pandemic.
