July 10, Fineko/abc.az. There is a necessity to increase in Azerbaijan the share of its own production on seed reserves, that will contribute to reducing imports, MP Vugar Bayramov stated at the Milli Majlis plenary session.

"Conceptually, expansion of production and reduction of imports are considered the main goals in seed production. Strengthening the legal framework will support the achievement of these goals," he said.

The MP added that international practice shows that the cost of seeds accounts for close to 10% of the cost of vegetable products.

"In more organic products, this share is comparatively higher. In this regard, development of seed production will lead to decline in the cost of agricultural products and a rise in crop yields. Globally, up to 15% of the produced wheat is reserved for seed production. In countries that specialize in agriculture, up to 85% of the seed wheat is produced locally," Bayramov said.

The parliamentarian emphasized that Azerbaijan's wheat reserves amount to 3.343 million tons.

"Of them, 1.649 million tons accounted for production. Seed wheat totals 111,447 tons (a 3.3% share compared to reserves and a 6.7% share compared to production). Our vegetable production reserves amount to 2.237 million tons, production - 1.838 million tons, and seeds - 1,063 tons. The reserves of vegetable seeds do not even reach 1% of the overall production," Bayramov said.
