Payment Cards in Azerbaijan Hit 22.5 Million, E-Commerce Drives Cashless Turnover

June 12, Fineko/abc.az. The Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) has released its statistical bulletin mapping out the dynamics of the domestic payment cards market and cashless transaction volumes up to the end of April.

According to ABC.AZ, tracking the transactional updates:

  • Expansion in Card Circulation: Total active payment cards issued by commercial banks and "Azerpost" LLC expanded by 108,000 units month-on-month, aggregating to 22,518,000 units (a 9% increase year-on-year). Structurally, debit cards rose by 11%, while credit card circulation dipped by 11%.

  • Cashless Volume & E-Commerce Metrics: Domestic cashless transactions grew by 16% year-on-year during the first four months. In April alone, domestic cashless card processing volume posted AZN 9.094 billion, heavily dominated by electronic commerce web channels which absorbed AZN 7.969 billion of the total turnover.

  • BKM Processing Indicators: The Interbank Card Center (BKM) cleared 15,900 transaction batches valued at EUR 1.7 million in April, dropping by roughly 5,100 operations (or 24.3%) and over EUR 900,000 compared to the same month in 2025. Cumulative BKM processing for the January-April window settled at 21,000 transactions valued at EUR 2.6 million.
