American universities risk losing $1 bn because of a decrease on number of international students

July 8, Fineko/abc.az. Dozens of U.S. universities may not receive around $1 billion in tuition fees because of the refusal or inability of new international students to come due to the policies of the Trump administration.

ABC.AZ reports that The Financial Times informs about this, citing an analysis of data from the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Tougher visa checks and delays are causing concern, especially in small universities with high percentage of foreigners. According to forecasts, in 2025, the number of international students will decrease by at least 10%, which will lead to losses of up to $3 billion when all students are accounted for. In May, the U.S. suspended new student visa interviews, citing plans to check applicants' social media accounts. The events in the Gaza Strip and the administration's decision to expel students who supported the protests caused a wave of protests in universities.
