October 15, Fineko/abc.az. Experiments to study the potential of soil microbes for their use in fuel cells are being conducted by researchers from the Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology and company Shikoku Electric Power.

ABC.AZ reports that scientists expect that microbes can serve as a clean, durable and affordable source of energy.

Microbial fuel cells are devices that generate electricity using bacteria that release electrons by consuming organic materials. Electrogenic microbes, such as those of the Shewanella species, are present in almost all types of soils on Earth.
