Planned U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland cancelled

10:50 - 19.06.2026

June 19, Fineko/abc.az. The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially confirmed that technical talks between the US and Iranian delegations, scheduled to take place on Friday at the Bürgenstock mountain resort, have been canceled.

ABC.AZ reports that this statement followed immediately after an emergency overnight message from the White House. The press service of the US administration announced that US Vice President J. D. Vance canceled his visit to Switzerland, where he was supposed to launch the first round of face-to-face negotiations on the Islamabad Memorandum.

Diplomatic and logistical markers of the event:

The position of the parties: In Washington, cancellation of Vance's visit was explained by the "complicated and unpredictable logistics" of preparing an agreement of this level. In turn, the Iranian negotiators made it clear that Tehran intends to first document the real steps of the U.S. towards de-escalation (including lifting the naval blockade) in practice.

Status of the Memorandum: Despite the disruption of the Burgenstock meeting, the 14-point agreement itself, brokered by Pakistan, remains in force. The Strait of Hormuz is open to civilian vessels, and the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed the lifting of the siege on Iranian ports.

Plans for the final: The Memorandum launches a 60-day technical marathon. During this time, the diplomats will have to work out mechanisms for a long-term agreement governing the phased lifting of economic sanctions against Tehran and the freezing of its nuclear program.
