May 15, Fineko/abc.az. Cuba declared its readiness to consider the U.S.’ proposal of $100 million in humanitarian aid, but expressed distrust of Donald Trump's intentions amid the ongoing oil blockade, exacerbating the crisis in the country.
ABC.AZ informs that Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stressed that aid should not be accompanied by political conditions. Last week, the U.S. Department of State said it had privately offered $100 million in aid to Cuba , as well as "free and fast satellite Internet" on the condition that island's authorities agree to "significant reforms".
Rodriguez called the U.S.’ proposal a "fiction", but the Trump administration later officially confirmed it.
After Washington's threats to impose duties on fuel suppliers, Cuba's allies Mexico and Venezuela cut off oil supplies, causing severe shortages of fuel and electricity. The UN has declared the fuel blockade illegal.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that Cuba would accept assistance only if international norms were observed, calling the U.S.’ proposal as contradictory and stressing that lifting sanctions would be a more effective measure.
