Turkey's Gross External Debt Rises to $539 Billion

August 20, Fineko/abc.az. The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey released external debt statistics for the second quarter of 2026.

According to the data, Turkey's total gross external debt stock expanded by 3.5% quarter-on-quarter to reach $539.0 billion, up from $518.5 billion in the previous quarter.

Short-term external debt grew by 2.5% to $170.7 billion, while long-term debt advanced 3.9% to $368.2 billion. By sector, public sector debt increased by 3.3% to $197.9 billion, private sector debt rose 4.2% to $318.0 billion, while the Central Bank's external liabilities dropped 4.8% to $23.1 billion. In terms of currency breakdown, the U.S. dollar held the largest share at 48.9%, followed by the euro at 28.8% and the Turkish lira at 12.2%.
