Belgium Destroys Planting Material to Prevent Vegetable Oversupply

June 8, Fineko/abc.az. The Belgian vegetable growers' association INGRO has moved to prevent a future market glut by destroying planting material and compensating farmers for the loss.

ABC.AZ reports, citing Nieuweoogst, that the association aims to stabilize the market and prevent a sharp drop in prices at the end of the season.

According to INGRO, some producers faced unusually long wait times for offers from processors, only to receive proposals to reduce both prices and supply volumes. In some instances, processors sought price cuts of up to 15%.

Luc De Waele, head of INGRO, stated that the current situation is unsustainable as farmers incur costs upfront without guaranteed sales. For the first time, the organization decided to destroy a portion of the planting material, covering the losses to reduce the total supply by 1,000 tons. This measure is intended to prevent buyers from forcing prices down to minimum levels. Farmers emphasize that the industry requires stable long-term agreements rather than market speculation and do not rule out repeating such measures in the future.
