December 25, Fineko/abc.az. Iran has temporarily halted natural gas exports to Iraq due to a sharp increase in domestic consumption, ABC.AZ informs, referring to the Iraqi Ministry of Energy.
The interruption of supplies reduced country's electricity generation by nearly 4.5 GW, and the authorities were forced to increase the use of local fuel.
The decision was made against the background of an abnormal cold snap in Iran, when approx. 655 million cu m of gas were consumed per day, most of it for heating residential buildings. Iran envisages around 43% of Iraq's gas needs for electricity generation.
