August 19, Fineko/abc.az. U.S. long-term government bonds rallied sharply after the Department of the Treasury announced it will at least double the size of its buyback operations for long-dated securities. Following the decision, benchmark 30-year bond yields fell by up to 9 basis points to 5.19%, offering relief to global debt markets that had been facing severe selling pressure.
Prior to the announcement, 30-year yields had climbed to levels not seen since 2007, but the increased buyback scale immediately sparked strong buying interest. The unexpected policy move arrived just as traders were preparing for a $16 billion auction of new 20-year Treasury notes, easing short-term pressure on borrowing markets.
The Treasury stated that expanding buybacks aims to strengthen market liquidity and satisfy steady demand for long-term nominal issuances.
