EU Charges Meta Over Addictive Designs on Facebook and Instagram

July 11, Fineko/abc.az. The European Commission has formally accused Meta of violating its digital regulations, stating that design structures embedded within Facebook and Instagram intentionally foster user addiction.

According to preliminary findings tracked by ABC.AZ, the EU regulator noted that engagement triggers such as "infinite scroll," video auto-play, aggressive push notifications, and hyper-personalized recommendation algorithms directly breach the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA) by neglecting critical physical and mental health safety assessments.

The Commission specifically highlighted Meta’s failure to mitigate risks associated with children spending excessive hours on these platforms overnight, demanding immediate structural modifications to the applications' layouts. While these findings represent an interim step and Meta retains the right to submit a formal defense, a final non-compliance ruling could subject the tech giant to administrative fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
