June 24, Fineko/abc.az. Tajikistan is ready to buy alumina from the Azerbaijani side for the needs of aluminum production, ABC.AZ informs, quoting Ambassador of Tajikistan to Azerbaijan Ilkhom Abdurakhmon.
The diplomat noted that the specialized enterprises of both countries - the Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO) and Azeraluminum - have long ago signed a cooperation agreement.
According to the ambassador, about a month ago, a regular meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation at the level of deputy prime ministers was held in the Azerbaijani capital, during which the topic of aluminum was also discussed.
"During this meeting, certain agreements were reached. The issue was discussed, and both sides demonstrated mutual interest, especially since the price of aluminum has increased slightly. Taking into account the logistical possibilities, the issue of aluminum supplies to Azerbaijan may be addressed in the near future. As far as I know, the Azerbaijani side has its own aluminum plant and produces this metal on its own. However, Azerbaijan also has a need to import aluminum, and Tajikistan is always ready to export it at mutually acceptable prices," Abdurakhmon said.
The diplomat emphasized that the final decisions remain with the two companies, as they are commercial entities that will independently assess the profitability of the supply, taking into account transportation and logistics costs.
"As for strategic cooperation in the manufacturing sector, the option of resuming the operation of the Ganja alumina plant is also being considered. If its launch or modernization begins next year, Tajikistan will be ready to purchase alumina from its Azerbaijani partners. From a logistical perspective, this is highly advantageous for us. I believe this will be an excellent step for importing alumina to Tajikistan and exporting aluminum to Azerbaijan in parallel," the diplomat emphasized.
