January 5, Fineko/abc.az. Turkey and Azerbaijan have signed a new long-term contract for the supply of natural gas produced at Absheron field, located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, with total volume of 33 bcm.

ABC.AZ infoms that Turkish Minister of Energy & Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar made the relevant statement in an interview for Channel 7.

According to the agreement, 2.25 bcm of gas a year will be delivered to Turkey for 15 years from Absheron field. Supplies will begin in 2029 and last until the 2040s.

"Using the existing infrastructure, we will supply this gas to our country via the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline," the minister said.

He stressed that long-term contracts and a strategy of resource diversification strengthen the security of Turkey's energy supply and make it possible to supply gas at competitive prices. According to a report by the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Agency (Enerji Piyasası Duzenleme Kurumu – EPDK), Azerbaijan exported 9.798 bcm of natural gas to Turkey for Jan-Oct 2025 (3.5% more versus Jan-Oct 2024). Azerbaijan is currently the 2nd largest exporter of natural gas to Turkey after Russia. According to the Ministry, Azerbaijan exported 11.478 bcm of gas to Turkey in 2024 (11.9% more than in 2023). Turkey is currently supplying Azerbaijani gas extracted as part of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Shah Deniz field development. Absheron field was discovered by Azerbaijani geologists in the 60s of the last century. It is reported that the volume of gas at the field is 350 bcm.
