ECB intends to launch digital euro in 2029, subject to legal framework

October 30, Fineko/abc.az. The European Central Bank (ECB) plans to launch digital currency in 2029, subject to the availability of an appropriate legal framework.

ABC.AZ informs, referring to Bloomberg’s sources, that the ECB will continue to "lay the foundation for the digital euro" after completing the preparatory phase this month. It started in 2023, and central banks hoped that the EU would adopt the rules necessary for introduction of a digital analogue of banknotes and coins in the meantime. However, the governments of the member states and the European Parliament still cannot come to an agreement, despite increasing pressure from politicians. They complain about the excessive dependence on American companies such as Visa, Mastercard and PayPal in the field of retail payments.
