Currently, there are 24 thermal power plants with total capacity of 7,903 MW, 65 hydroelectric power plants with capacity of 1,443.5 MW, 9 solar power plants with capacity of 278.2 MW, 5 wind power plants with capacity of 63.5 MW, a solid waste power plant with capacity of 37 MW and 3 hybrid power plants with total capacity of 7.3 MW, ABC.AZ informs, refering to an article of Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, published in the official newspaper on the occasion of the Power Engineer's Day.

The capacity of renewable energy power plants, including hydroelectric power plants, is 1,829.6 MW, which is approximately 18.8% of the overall production capacity. During this period, in addition to generation, the capacity of the electric grid also increased, reaching 29,714 MW."

Shahbazov stressed that the growing production capacities in recent years have contributed to stability in Azerbaijan's energy balance: "Last year, the country generated 28.4 bn kWh of electricity, of which 24.1 bn kWh were used to meet domestic needs, and 1.4 bn kWh were exported. Imports amounted to 70.7 million kWh. In the first 9 months of this year, 21.8 bn kWh of energy was produced, exports amounted to 989.6 million, and imports reached 145 million kWh."

According to the minister, the main trend observed in the production of electricity is that it is renewable energy sources that form the growth dynamics: "In particular, solar power plant Garadagh with capacity of 230 MW has increased the production of electricity from solar energy 10-fold in almost 2 years of its operation. The production of 1 bn kWh of electricity at the plant during this period not only confirms that it is operating at full capacity, but also once again shows that Azerbaijan has set realistic and justifiable goals for green energy and is consistently implementing them."
