October 7, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. government shutdown has slowed down negotiations on a trade deal with India, but their sixth round is likely to take place soon, ABC.AZ reports, quoting Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal.
A new fiscal year began in the U.S. on October 1, but Congress did not have time to agree on a budget, and the government is now unable to work. Such a government shutdown in the U.S. implies shutdown of some government agencies funded directly by Congress due to the lack of an agreed budget for the next fiscal year, and this is not a rare situation. Trump announced earlier that he could use the government shutdown period to make massive staff cuts and payments. According to Goyal, Democrats' position created the problem in approving the budget, and the White House uses the current situation to get rid of programs that Republicans do not like.
"Perhaps the sixth round of negotiations with the U.S. will take place soon. Due to the government shutdown in the U.S., we will have to determine when the next round of negotiations may take place," CNBC TV18 quoted the minister as saying.
