July 16, Fineko/abc.az. Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev has clarified the problem of water shortage observed recently in Azerbaijan.
According to ABC.AZ, at Cabinet Ministers’ meeting dedicated to the results of socioeconomic development in the first half of 2020 and the challenges ahead, Mustafayev said that the country's water scarcity, climate change and a rise in average temperature, significant reduction in surface water resources coming from neighboring countries, flows in rivers and precipitation, on the other hand, the increase in water demand as a result of development of the economy, including agriculture, the acreage, irrigation and drinking water networks have caused water shortages in Azerbaijan.
He noted that from this angle, especially this year, there is a tense situation in the sphere of water resources of the country: "In the existing reservoirs with a total volume of 20.5 bn cu m, currently water reserves are 11.3 bn cu m, of which 8.6 bn cu m is an unused volume."
