October 2, Fineko/abc.az. President of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), Christine Lagarde, has emphasized that policymakers must anticipate systemic risks to ensure the safe deployment of artificial intelligence in the financial sector.
Speaking at the 10th-anniversary conference of the ECB and ESRB, Lagarde disclosed that nearly 90% of major Eurozone banks are currently utilizing generative AI. She warned that the autonomy offered by these technologies creates core risks in financial markets, cyber resilience, and the geopolitical realm.
According to Lagarde, autonomous AI agents operating without human oversight could amplify market shocks and lead to price manipulation. Furthermore, she highlighted that the concentration of cutting-edge models in the US and China exposes Europe to potential access disruptions amid geopolitical tensions. Drawing parallels to Cold War-era nuclear arms control agreements, the ECB chief called for strong international cooperation to manage AI development.
