Fuel crisis in Italy: Strike in Sicily and ‘Eni effect’

October 1, Fineko/abc.az. Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and threats to logistics in the Red Sea after the Houthi offensive raised fuel prices in the EU to multi-year highs - in Italy, diesel reached €2.5/liter, on highways - up to €3/liter.

In Sicily, farmers and transport workers announced a five-day nationwide strike from October 16 to 20, threatening food shortages; the government persuaded Eni and IP to give discounts (diesel €2.10, gasoline €1.99), while competitors' prices remained the same.

On September 29, the first day of the action caused a panic rush - kilometer-long queues and quickly emptied tanks (the Eni effect); the flow of customers has now decreased slightly, but delays still persist at key gas stations, especially at the entrances to Rome.

Most of the diesel and petroleum products go to the Apennines from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE.
