July 16, Fineko/abc.az. The purchasing power of Turkey's largest banknote, the 200-lira note (close to $4.35), has decreased almost 26-fold since its introduction in 2009 because of high inflation.
According to newspaper Ekonomım, goods and services that could be purchased for one such banknote in 2009 are now worth around 5,143 liras.
At the same time, the share of 200-lyre banknotes in Turkey's cash circulation reached a record high of 88.7%. Out of a total cash supply of 928.4 billion liras, these banknotes accounted for 823.6 billion liras.
The 200-lira banknote was introduced in January 2009 and remains the largest denomination in the country. In the face of inflation, Turkey is discussing the matter of issuance of higher-denomination banknotes, but the Central Bank has not yet announced any such plans.
