Australia sues Amazon over Prime terms

12:03 - 30.06.2026

June 30, Fineko/abc.az. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission has launched legal proceedings against Amazon, accusing the company of including unfair terms in its Amazon Prime subscription.

ABC.AZ informs that the regulator claims that from November 2023 to August 2025, more than 1 million users encountered provisions that allow companies to unilaterally change terms without notice or compensation.

The main dispute is the addition of ads to Prime Video: after its introduction in July 2024, users were asked to pay extra A\$2.99 per month for ad-free viewing, despite already paying for an annual subscription (A\$79). The authorities are demanding that the terms be declared invalid, penalties be imposed, damages be compensated to customers, and legal costs be covered.
