Changes in composition of OPEC: UAE officially leaves organization

15:47 - 1.06.2026

June 1, Fineko/abc.az. A landmark event has taken place in the global energy market - the UAE has officially withdrawn from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The decision came into force on May 1, 2026. ABC.AZ informs.

Statistical data shows that this step is behind years of growing tension within the cartel caused by deep disagreements over oil production quotas.

The main catalyst for the gap was Abu Dhabi's large-scale economic breakthrough, which changed the balance of power in the region:

UAE's record exports: By the end of 2025, the UAE's overall exports of goods and services showed a sharp increase, reaching impressive $738 bn.

The gap with the cartel's leaders: The economic performance of the Emirates has significantly outpaced that of other key OPEC members. In particular, Saudi Arabia's exports for the same period reached only about $379 bn, which is almost half the result of the UAE.

The dynamics of the last four years clearly demonstrates the fundamental transformation of the economic landscape among the largest energy exporters. Experts emphasize that UAE's withdrawal from OPEC is a clear signal of a serious weakening of the previous structure of influence and the beginning of a new era in the global oil market.
