October 8, Fineko/abc.az. The phased termination of the circulation of Visa and Mastercard cards in Russia is associated with expiration of their security certificates, ABC.AZ reports, quoting Dmitry Dubynin, Director General of the National Payment Card System.

Since January 1, 2025, the certificates of international systems have stopped working for all microchips, which affects security of operations. Banks can no longer renew their issuing certificates - this feature disappeared after Visa and Mastercard left Russia.

Their certificates expired at the end of 2024, and in the summer of 2025, the Bank of Russia announced plans to limit the use of cards with expired protection.
