June 6, Fineko/abc.az. Microsoft will pay a fine of $20 million for illegal collection of children's data.
ABC.AZ reports that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fined Microsoft Corp. for $20 million for illegal collection of data on underage users of game console Xbox.
According to Commission's report, Microsoft collected children's data without their parents' permission and stored them in the period from 2015 to 2020. This was a violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Specifying your name, age, and email address is a prerequisite for registering an Xbox account. At that, the company stored user data even if they indicated that they were under 13 years old, the FTC noted.
Since the beginning of 2023, Microsoft's capitalization has grown by 40%, to $2.49 trillion.
