August 30, Fineko/abc.az. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will host finance ministers and central bank governors from the G20 major economies this week in Asheville, North Carolina, pressing counterparts to address global trade imbalances, promote growth, and cut economic ties with Iran.
The summit in Asheville marks a return to active U.S. leadership in the G20 process. Bessent aims to refocus the group on core macroeconomic fundamentals, deregulation, and supply chain resilience. However, he faces tough scrutiny from foreign officials over surging U.S. public debt—which recently surpassed $40 trillion—unpredictable Treasury market interventions, and widespread tariff tensions.
Washington has signaled that continued access to the U.S. dollar financial system remains contingent on full compliance with Iranian sanctions, a stance expected to spark friction with key trading partners such as China.
