Global Food Prices Reach 4-Year High in August Amid Supply Concerns, FAO Reports

14:23 - 4.09.2026

September 4, Fineko/abc.az. Global food commodity prices rose by 1.9% month-on-month in August to average 133.3 points, reaching their highest level since late 2022, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The surge was primarily driven by sharp increases in sugar (+11.9%), cereals (+2.2%), and dairy products. Analysts attribute the rally to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Black Sea, trade logistics disruptions, and adverse weather conditions including extreme heat in Europe and El Niño effects in Asia. Meanwhile, food inflation in Turkey was recorded at 33.4%. FAO economists warn that returning risk premiums in agricultural markets could fuel further inflationary pressure.
