IEA: Crisis in Strait of Hormuz to change global energy sector

16:20 - 21.04.2026

April 21, Fineko/abc.az. The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, said that the situation around the Strait of Hormuz has become a serious global economic problem and could lead to a restructuring of the global energy map.

ABC.AZ informs that according to Birol, the blocking of the Strait has stopped the supply of not only oil and gas, but also fertilizers, petrochemicals and helium, which are critically important goods for the global economy. Even with the imminent opening, the restoration of flows will take at least two years and will require significant investments.

Birol stressed that the crisis has undermined the reliability of the strait and will increase market volatility, and the dependence of the global economy on one transport route will decrease.
