Raw Sugar Futures Surge to 17-Month High on Indian Import Demand and Brazil Supply Delays

22:57 - 10.09.2026

September 10, Fineko/abc.az. Global raw sugar futures have climbed to their highest level since March 2025, driven by strong import demand from India and processing delays in Brazil. Year-to-date sugar prices have surged by nearly 30% as global market expectations shifted from a surplus to a deficit.

India, the world's second-largest producer, has seen millers request approval for roughly 800,000 tonnes of raw sugar imports under a duty-free quota opened in August. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Brazil's Center-South region continue to disrupt sugarcane crushing, and elevated crude oil prices are incentivizing mills to divert cane toward ethanol production. The International Sugar Organization forecasts a global deficit of 260,000 tonnes for the 2026-2027 season due to El Niño impacts across Asia.
