Saudi Arabia continues to increase renewable energy capacity

10:57 - 6.01.2025

January 6, Fineko/abc.az. Saudi SPPC has begun selecting applicants for the construction of four energy storage systems with total capacity of 2 kW.

ABC.AZ informs that four storage complexes will have to store 8 kWh of electricity at a time, which is equivalent to almost 10 minutes of electricity consumption for the whole of Saudi Arabia.

The project is part of a strategy under which Saudi Arabia plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the structure of electricity consumption to 50% by 2030. According to Ember, in 2023, renewable sources made up only 1% of country's electricity generation.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), by the end of 2023, there were only 5 solar and wind power plants operating in the country with total capacity of 2.8 GW. However, another 25 facilities with capacity of 21.4 GW are at the planning and construction stage, almost half of which should be commissioned by the end of 2026.
