October 16, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan started production of cold-pressed oil from grape processing waste (grape seeds), for which a patent was obtained.

ABC.AZ reports that Vugar Salimov, the director of the Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture & Winemaking, informed about this.

He added that research is currently underway on grape varieties from which oil will be obtained:

"The cold pressing method improves the quality of the oil, eliminates the risk of formation of undesirable substances, does not contain chemicals, preservatives and additives. The production of grape seed oil is relevant all over the world. This oil is widely used in the production of cosmetics, medicine, and the food industry.»

Salimov noted that large amounts of waste are generated during processing in viticulture and winemaking:

"Waste includes seeds, peel, etc. About 1,000 tons of grapes produce 300 tons of waste. Therefore, the prospect of waste-free technology is very high in the field of viticulture and winemaking. The Institute also conducts research on the production of bio-active substances from residues formed during the processing of grapes."

He added that the Institute is also working on development of technical grape varieties for country's national wine brands:

"Technical grape varieties are evaluated by modern methods, the directions of their technological use are determined. Different types of wines are produced from them, depending on their technological orientation. These technical varieties include such rare technical grape varieties of the country as “Bayanshira", “Melei", “Madrasah", “Hindogny", “Shirvanshahi". Our technical grape varieties are more productive compared to varieties from other countries. In recent years, significant work has been done to increase the yield of local varieties."
