December 19, Fineko/abc.az. The level of self-sufficiency in fish products currently produced in Azerbaijan is low, and domestic production is insufficient to fully meet domestic demand, ABC.AZ reports quoting Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov.

He stressed that this problem is caused by the weak development of aquaculture in the country:

"In the country, fishing is developed mainly in an extensive way, mainly preference is given to breeding and natural fattening of fish species such as carp. Currently, economic activities by extensive methods has negative effect on reducing yields in fish production and on the quality indicators of fish products. Unsatisfactory quality indicators and the volume of fish production do not allow the processing industry to provide sufficient raw materials, which leads to an increase in imports of fish and fish products."
