July 14, Fineko/abc.az. The European Union is preparing to sign an agreement with Azerbaijan on unconditional gas imports in order to reduce dependence on Russia.
ABC.AZ reports that this is stated in the draft agreement considered by EUobserver.
The draft says that that EU-Azerbaijan strategic partnership provides for increasing the diversification of Caspian natural gas supplies to the EU and, possibly, to the countries of the Western Balkans.
Under the document, the parties strive to maintain bilateral trade in natural gas, including through exports to the EU, through the Southern Gas Corridor, in the amount of at least 20 bn cu m of gas annually by 2027 in accordance with commercial feasibility and market demand.
This implies significant investments in the expansion of the pipeline network of the Southern Gas Corridor. However, the size of the investment amount is not disclosed in the draft agreement.
