Azerbaijan to set limit for obligation to assess environmental impact

July 13, Fineko/abc.az. In Azerbaijan, when designing agricultural production facilities, threshold values will be set for mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA).

Corresponding amendments are proposed to the Laws on Suspension of Business Inspections and on Environmental Impact Assessment”.

The draft law was submitted for discussion at today’s meeting of the Milli Majlis Committee on Natural Resources, Energy and Ecology.

According to the draft law, the threshold values will be as follows:

- for livestock enterprises, the design capacity is 1,000 heads of cattle (with 5 heads of small cattle equating to 1 head of cattle, and each unit of other hoofed animals equating to 1 head of cattle);

- for poultry farms - 40,000 chicken equivalents (1 ostrich is equivalent to 25 chickens, 1 turkey or goose is equivalent to 5 chickens, and 8 quails are equivalent to 1 chicken, except for the incubation stage);

- for fish farms (including aquaculture) - an annual production volume of 500 tons.

Agroparks will be subject to mandatory EIA if their performance in these activities meets or exceeds the established thresholds.
