June 24, Fineko/abc.az. Experts from the FAO and the WB have updated the AQUASTAT monitoring data.
ABC.AZ reports that according to the data, Turkmenistan has become the leader in terms of freshwater intake per capita (about 4,350 m³ per year). Montenegro and Guyana follow it.
The ranking also includes Uzbekistan, Chile, the U.S., Uruguay, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Peru, and Kyrgyzstan.
The main reason for the high figures is not household consumption, but irrigated agriculture, which accounts for more than 70% of the world's water intake. The UN notes that excessive water use in arid regions puts a strain on ecosystems and requires modernization of irrigation.
