Japan may release 20-day oil reserves amid risks around Strait of Hormuz

11:30 - 9.04.2026

April 9, Fineko/abc.az. The Japanese government is considering the matter of releasing a 20-day oil reserve from its reserves.

ABC.AZ informs with reference to news agency Kyodo that this can be done in May.

In mid-March, the country had already begun releasing stocks that would meet its needs for about 45 days. The oil industry called for this process to continue in May, fearing that the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could continue for some time.

Earlier, the Japanese authorities concluded that they would be able, thanks to reserves, to fully meet the country's domestic oil needs at least until the end of 2026.

Against the background of the escalation around Iran and disruptions in shipping, Japan began to look for alternative sources of oil, as about 95% of imports come from the Middle East through the Strait of Hormuz.
